This year, I am on pace to sell over $6,000,000 in products for Amazon. (That’s Amazon’s revenue, not my commission.)
I’ve easily achieved a six-figure income this year… solely from promoting Amazon products.
The craziest part is that since I have already done the majority of the work that needs to be done on my affiliate sites, if I wanted to, I could spend 10 hours or so a week updating them and they would probably maintain their current earnings.
So, if you’re wondering whether or not you can make money as an Amazon Associates, let me definitively answer your question for you…
Unfortunately a lot of the top names in internet marketing will tell you that you need to be creating and selling digital products, or physical products, or even selling some kind of paid service.
You may have even heard them recommending that you jump into writing and selling Kindle books.
Maybe that is a good strategy for them… and maybe it is a good strategy for you…
But I’m going to recommend that you do something different. I’m going to recommend that you start with affiliate marketing…
And, more specifically, with the Amazon Associates program.
If You Haven’t Made Any Real Money Online, You Should Turn Your Attention to the Amazon Associates Program
Now, I’m not saying that you can’t make money online as a beginner by using some of the methods that are currently popular, but there is one thing about promoting Amazon products that is a lot easier than creating and promoting your own products…
That one thing is that Amazon has already spent millions (if not billions) ensuring that their listings will convert at incredibly high levels.
What does this mean?
It means that if you try to create and promote your own product or service as a beginner without having an already established following, you are going to find that the most difficult part of the process is in promoting your product or service.
Because not only will you have to grind to create a great product or service, but then you will have to turn around and grind even more to promote it.
The experts who create these awesome courses already have huge follower bases setup. They also know how to promote their products incredibly well, because they’ve been doing it for years.
So, not only can they get a ton of sales just by writing an email about their new product and sending it to their massive email lists, but they can also get even more sales by leveraging the relationships they’ve made with others in their market, and using the effective tactics that they have learned along the way.
You can’t do any of that if you are just getting started online. At least not without putting in a ton of work or spending a ton of money on advertising.
Eventually, everyone should try to move to a place where they can create their own products. However, when you’re trying to make your first buck online, you already have so much to learn…
Why add more to the plate?
If You Have the Right Content Strategy & You Learn How to Get Real Traffic, You WILL Make Money as an Amazon Associate
Amazon is unique in that if you send 100 people to their website—in my experience—around four of those people will buy something.
That’s how good Amazon is.
It doesn’t matter if you send 100 random people to Amazon, as long as they are real people, at least one person in that group is going to buy something.
I guarantee it.
You can’t say the same thing for promoting your own product unless you have already established yourself as someone who is trustworthy and reliable. And, if you’re just getting started, that just isn’t possible to do right out of the gates.
So, if you are trying to build your first profitable website, why don’t you make life easier on yourself and send people to a website that has spent billions of dollars so that they can ensure that as few customers as possible are allowed to slip through the cracks?
How to Get Started as An Associate
This is the strategy you need to use when setting up your Amazon Associates site:
- Figure out your niche
- Write a ton of content and link to Amazon where suitable
- Promote that content to get traffic
Of course, at some point, you also need to setup your website, design it, create your social media profiles, and hash out what your brand is all about.
But aside from those tasks, the 3 steps mentioned above are essentially the most effective steps to creating a profitable Amazon Associates website.
Let me give you a few tips for each step in the process…
Figure Out Your Niche
Before you start producing content, you need to figure out what your website is going to be about. It’s important to pick a niche that you care about and that you can produce a lot of content on.
Aside from that, here are a few tips to help you find a profitable niche for your Amazon Associates website:
Tip #1: Make sure you choose a niche that has a big audience. A few years ago a lot of experts were telling people to create small “micro-niche” sites because they had no competition and would be easy to rank for. The problem was that those small niche sites had no chance to grow. So, when choosing a niche to get into, make sure that you pick a broad one with a ton of opportunity to grow. You can still start out focusing on a smaller group of items within that bigger niche, just make sure you brand yourself in such a way to account for future growth.
Tip #2: How expensive are the products in your niche? If you want to sell stickers and the average sticker costs $0.50, you would have to sell millions of stickers to make ends meat. So, to make it worth your while, you need to make sure that you are choosing a niche where you can sell products that cost at least $100 or more (ideally even higher).
Tip #3: Make sure you first check what Amazon is going to pay you for the products in your niche. In some of Amazon’s product categories, like televisions or computer components, you will only get a 2.5% commission for every item you sell for them. In other niches, depending on how many items you sell in a month, you can make as much as 8.5% per product you sell. So, make sure you get into one of those niches…
Write a Ton of Content Related to You Niche
Once you have your niche picked out, you need to produce content. Writing articles or producing videos are the main forms of content creation. I personally stick to written articles, but a combination of both video and written content is the most powerful method of content creation.
Here are some tips to help you get started producing content.
Tip #1: As the title says, produce a lot of content. The more content you produce, the more content you will have indexed in Google’s search engine and, therefore, the more likely you will be to get organic traffic.
Tip #2: Think about what your main “selling” content is going to be and produce that first. Your main “selling” content will be the articles, posts, or videos, that you will place links to Amazon from. So, product reviews, “best of” posts (where you talk about and give brief overviews of the best products in your niche), how-to guides, etc. This is going to be the content that forms the backbone of your site. Your goal thereafter with content creation is either to A) create more main “selling” content, or B) create content that drives traffic to your “selling content.
Tip #3: Your selling content should be longer and more in-depth than your supporting content. You want all of your content to rank well in Google’s search results, but you especially want your “selling” content to rank high. And, the longer your content is, the better odds it has of ranking higher in the search results.
Tip #4: Not all of your content should be geared towards selling products on Amazon. On top of producing product reviews and “best of” posts, you should also seek to produce content that educates your readers about your niche. The more your audience knows about your niche and the more you excite them about your niche, the more likely they are to buy products in your niche.
Promote Your Content to Get Traffic
Just creating your website and creating content isn’t enough… at least not if you don’t mind waiting, hoping, and praying for Google to decide your content is worthy.
You need to get out there and actively promote each piece of content you create.
In the past, promoting content would be referred to as “acquiring backlinks,” but now it is called “outreaching and networking.” Essentially, you do want backlinks back to your content, but your main goal with promoting your content is to get it in front of as many eyeballs as possible.
Here are some tips to help you promote your content
Tip #1: Search for the posts or pages that are ranking on the first page for the keyword you want to be ranking for. Then, using a tool like Open Site Explorer, Ahrefs, or Majestic SEO, find out what sites are linking to that page. This will give you a list of websites you can email to see if they would be interested in linking back to your new content. If you get a list of 100 websites and you send all of them a well-written and well thought-out email asking if they will include your link on their site, it’s very likely that at least one of them will help you out. Here are some examples of how you can approach this kind of link building opportunity.
Tip #2: Leverage Twitter. Twitter is actually fairly easy to manipulate and build a big following on. The core behind building a big following on Twitter is to follow a lot of people who you want to follow you back. Naturally, people follow the people who follow them. So, the more people you follow, the more people will follow you back. I go further into this method in my Kindle book Twitter Elite (it’s only $2.99) and ultimately it explains how you can build and leverage a big Twitter following so that when you do have a new piece of content, you can get more engagement on it from your Twitter followers.
Tip #3: If you’re willing to spend a little bit of money, fire up a Facebook ad and let it promote your content for you. Facebook ads really aren’t that expensive once you figure out how to make them work and so they can be a great way to give your content a boost.
Tip #4: Just like in tip #1, this tip requires that you send out a bunch of emails. In this case, just find all of the major players in your niche, craft a well-written and well-thought-out email that lets them know that you just published a new piece of content and that you’d love to hear what they think of it. Again, apply this strategy as a “strength-in-numbers” kind of thing. The more people you email, the more you increase your chances of getting your content promoted.
